Get up and go
Sophie Guidry said that for most of her life she was the chubby girl, but today she is inching closer to reaching her goal of doing handstand pushups, toes to bar and pullups.
“The sky’s the limit,” she said. “I want to see how strong I can get.”
That attitude is why Sophie is the CrossFit Unlimited Athlete of the Month for February 2018.
A 31-year-old wife and mother to three children ages 4, 2 and 7 months, Sophie started boot camp in Eunice in 2015, hoping to lose baby weight after her first pregnancy. She then became pregnant with her second child.
Following that pregnancy, she returned to CrossFit…and became pregnant a third time. She worked out until she was 32 weeks along.
“Now, I’m done having babies,” she laughed. “I came back in September and I’ve lost about 50 pounds since I had the baby.”
In addition to being a mother to three very young children, Sophie also works full-time running her family’s business. Still, she is at the Crowley box every weekday morning at 5 a.m. for a WOD.
“On December 1, I decided to switch to the early class, when everyone in my house would still be asleep,” she said. “After about two weeks, it became a habit to just get up early. It clears my mind and eases my stress. It’s one hour a day that’s for me.”
In addition to losing weight and managing stress, Sophie finds it rewarding when she realizes she can lift more than she did a month ago or that she has reached a goal she previously set for herself. Now she has her sights set on mastering handstand pushups, toes to bar and pullups, movements she will conquer soon enough.
And while she WODs for herself, it makes her a better wife and mom, too.
“When I get my WOD in, I’m just happier,” she said. “I get back at six, just as my kids are waking up. I like them seeing that Mom is working out. It sets a better example for them. I was always overweight, always the chubby girl, and I don’t want that for them. Actually, when each of them is old enough, I want them to try CrossFit Kids.”
Now in the best shape of her life, Sophie simply wants to continue on her fitness journey by being the healthiest version of herself she possibly can.
“I just get up and go,” she said of her early morning workouts. “I just get it done.”
