“When did I first notice that I was overweight? Four years old,” a now 33-year-old Claire Clement claimed.

“When I was four. Seriously. My mom always had me on a diet when I was little, but then my mom passed away in a car accident when I was 14, and my dad let me eat everything I wanted because he felt bad that I didn’t have a mom anymore.”

Claire has struggled with her weight her entire life, and she’s tried every fad diet known to man. Then three years ago, a friend convinced her to join CrossFit Unlimited Jennings’ boot camp for beginners. Since that time, Claire lost 102 pounds and gained a love for fitness, a CrossFit family, a supportive husband and the strength to love herself with exercise instead of food.

“I used to say ‘I don’t want to do this’ or ‘I don’t want to go by myself,’ but that’s when I was doing it for someone else,” she explained. “I was always doing it because someone else wanted me to do it. But for the first time in my life, I’m doing this for me now.”

In February 2016, Claire tried her very first CrossFit Unlimited Jennings cycling class, despite her fear of face-planting.

“When I told my friend I was going to fall off the bike, she just laughed and told me she would pick me up and put me back on it,” Claire grinned “That’s why I insist on riding the bike in the back next to the wall. That’s my bike.” Claire said her first cycling class was terrible.

“I only did 1.2 miles and I thought I was going to die,” she said. “Then I thought I was going to be sore forever.”

But Claire continued to attend the 5:15 a.m. cycling class every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, which also motivated her to clean up her diet.

“During the month of February 2016, I lost 22 pounds,” Claire smiled, “and during class on Saturday, I was able to ride 4.9 miles after only being able to do one mile on my first day.”

Fast forward a little over one year and Claire has lost a total of 102 pounds and can now record a 13.6 mile ride.

Oh, and she still hasn’t fallen off the bike. Actually, she’s fallen for the bike. In fact, Claire became a CrossFit Unlimited Jennings’ cycling class instructor in August 2016.

“It’s a different kind of cardio,” she explained. “It’s not like running down the road. The atmosphere is different. The music is different. There’s just something about this class that makes you want to come back and do it again. I didn’t love it after my first class, but after my first week, I couldn’t get enough of it.” Claire said that weight loss is a short term goal – she has a much bigger goal in mind.

“I want to have a baby Claire Bear one day,” she said. “I knew in order to do that, I had to be in the best physical health that I could be. After over a year of doing CrossFit, I have achieved just that!”

Claire knows that she has what it takes to be a great mom.
